Cultural theorist Stuart Hall describes representation as
the process by which meaning is produced and exchanged between members of
culture through the use of language, signs, and images which stand for or
represent things.
The Old View: representation is re-submitted information.
This implies there is one fixed meaning for what is represented. It views
representation as either an accurate or distorted depiction of an event it
happens.
The New View: representation as a constitutive, meaning it
is part of the event, you must investigate it from within. This involves
multiple interpretations and will never have a fixed meaning. The meaning
depends on individual interpretation and how the information has been represented
to begin with. This is a continuous and active cycle of creation.
